Wellhead Protection Plan

The Wellhead Protection (WHP) Plan for the City  of Avon is required by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) to control the potential contamination sources that present a risk to the City of Avon's drinking water.  The goal for the City of Avon is to maintain a safe and adequate drinking water supply for the community that meets the safe drinking water requirements for protecting the public's health, safety and general welfare of the community.  If you have any questions about the plan, please call (320) 342-8101.

Protect your well
A well provides a reliatble, safe source of drinking water when the well is properly located, constructed, and maintained.  Please visit the Minnesota Department of Health Website to learn more on how to protect your well.

Subsurface Sewage Treatment System
Residents in areas without access to public sewer systems maintain their own septic systems of subsurface sewage treatment systems (SSTS).  A poorly functioning septic system is a threat to human health and the environmentbecause it may not remove pathogens, nutrients and other chemicals from the used water before it enters out groundwater or lakes.  Please visit the MPCA website to learn more about SSTS.

Aboveground Storage Tanks
ASTS which store liquid substances that may pollute the waters of the state are regulated by Minnesota Rules, Chapter 7151, if site capacity is less than one million gallons.  Larger facilities (facilities with a capacity of one million gallons or more) are regulated by permits negotiated with MPCA.  Pease visit the MPCA Website (a), MPCA Website (b) or the EPA website to learn more about aboveground storage tanks.

Underground Storage Tanks
USTS that contain petroleum or hazardous substances are subject to the MPCA's design and operating rules for USTs.  Tank appurtenances such as piping and dispensers are also covered.  Please visit the MPCA Website or the EPA Website to learn more about underground storage tanks.
